Jody Shares Her Great Vatulele Experience

Every day we received a little newsletter about the things going on the next day or two. . . we never felt a lack of things at all, in fact, there was more than we could fit in and still relax to the max. Some of the things we chose to do were: a hike to hidden, sacred caves with a dip in the clear cold water inside the cave; a boat ride to our own private island where we were left to our own devices for several hours (included them setting up our own picnic lunch with champagne under a straw shelter); a hike to see the giant red prawns in the jungle, which are sacred to the island; kayaking all around the island to our hearts content; attending a wedding on the beach with dancers from the village and a kava ceremony; private dinner on the beach under the stars by lantern light; private lunch in a special nook up on the cliff; private breakfast, lunch & dinners in our bure any time we wanted; room service in the room or on the beach any time, etc etc.

Every single thing is included in the price, all the champagne (excellent quality!), tropical drinks, hors d'oevres, food, private dinners, side trips, EVERYTHING is included in the price. There are no extra costs at all. Probably the first and only place I've ever been to where they do your laundry for you at no charge. They tell you when you arrive, you make yourself at home, you just let them know whatever you want.

Honestly, there was much more available than we could have every possibly imbibed or participated in. There was also a trip to the local village which we didn't go on, as well as diving & snorkeling trips which we didn't participate in.

As for communal dining, you never once are obligated to do that. You can choose to have every single meal in your room, if you want, or on your verandah under the stars. But the times we did eat with the others, I enjoyed. It's a kind of interesting thing to eat with the other guests. . . by candlelight, in the open air or in the open lounge. . . the different personalities, eccentric types, the Indiana Jones characters. Most of the guests were pretty down to earth. . . alot of Americans and Australians, several couples were honeymooners, and the wedding couple. It's fun! But we did choose to eat most of our meals alone together, being our 10th anniversary.

As for the air conditioning, I wouldn't have wanted it. It would have marred the beautiful and authentic environment. There were ceiling fans, and a huge mosquito net over the bed, and french doors on all sides of the main area so you could open it up completely to the world outside (it was very private. . in every bure, you only see trees, sand, stars, etc. None of the bures are in view of any of the others, and every one has its own path down to the beach, which is deserted most of the time. This is not the kind of place for your average Joe with his Sheraton air-conditioned room and built in "jacuzzi" jet bathtub. This is much more high class, because the environment is authentic and every possible whim is attended to.

There is nothing else on the island other than the resort, the jungle and a village or two. It feels like paradise, the kind you dream about. The island is pristine and undeveloped. This is the true getaway for an earthy, sophisticated type. It wouldn't be appreciated by the Hilton type of person. For instance, the maids come every day and cover your bed, table and bathroom with fresh flowers, all laid out in intricate designs! You might find a gecko in your room, because it's open to the environment.

You arrive at Vatulele in a seaplane, a 45 min flight from Nadi. When we landed, a whole group of people came out to us singing and carrying tropical drinks in hand. Mark, the Australian manager, as friendly as they come, personally greets you and welcomes you. Some of the Fijian guys carry you off the plane (if you're still wearing shoes so you don't get wet), and take your bags for you. You are escorted by friendly locals into the beautiful open air lounge. Money & reservations are never discussed. . . it's all done. It's all included, so there's nothing to find out about except where your bure is, and one of the employees takes you there when you're ready. You realize the second you arrive that you are in a truly FIRST CLASS place. . . the kind of first class that has no pretensions, and no tipping.

I can recommend it completely with no reservations whatsoever! We loved it, and it made for an incredible 10th Anniversary!!!

Sincerely,
Jody
